Public Health Advisory On Pig's Ears Dog Treats

The public is advised to use extreme caution when handling pig's ears dog treats from Farm Meats Canada Ltd., Alberta. Retailers in Nova Scotia are voluntarily removing this product from their shelves.

"There have been several cases of salmonella in other provinces linked to pigs ears dog treats made by Farm Meats Canada Ltd." said Dr. Maureen Baikie, acting Provincial Medical Officer of Health. "All persons handling these treats are strongly advised to use extreme caution to prevent a serious illness."

The public is advised to wash their hands thoroughly with soap and warm water immediately after handling the treats. Persons handling pets that have been given the treats should also wash their hands very carefully. In addition, children, seniors and people who are chronically ill are advised not to handle pig's ears dog treats from this company.

Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. It can be particularly serious for children, seniors and people with chronic illness.
