National Truck Survey
Nova Scotia will again participate in the National Roadside Truck Survey, a nationwide study of truck traffic. The joint announcement was made by the ministers of Business and Consumer Services and Transportation and Public Works.
"The survey is another opportunity for truckers and government to work together to improve highway safety and develop programs that better reflect trends in the industry," said Neil LeBlanc, Minister of Business and Consumer Services.
The survey began in 1991. It is conducted every four years to collect data on commercial truck traffic for a national database. The information on routes, origins and destinations, cargo, truck types and equipment, and weights and dimensions is gathered voluntarily from truckers. The survey will take place at scales located in Amherst, Enfield, Kelly Lake, and at the Cape Breton Causeway between Sept. 9 and Oct. 1.
"Trucking is a vital component of Nova Scotia's transportation system and economy," said Gordon Balser, Minister of Transportation and Public Works. "The more we know about trucks, cargos and travel patterns, the better off we'll be in planning for road maintenance, upgrading and new construction. This survey will provide important data to my department."
The survey is sponsored by the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators and Transport Canada. Every Canadian province and territory participates in the survey. Participation by truckers is voluntary, and the collected data is kept confidential and used only for statistical analyses.
Both Minister LeBlanc and Minister Balser are asking for the support of truckers and the industry while their departments complete the survey.
The National Roadside Truck Survey will be conducted at scale locations on the following dates:
- Cape Breton Causeway (westbound) -- Sept. 9, 10, and 13
- Cape Breton Causeway (eastbound) -- Sept. 14-17
- Amherst (northbound) -- Sept. 21 and 22
