Sport and Recreation Commission

Jeff Farwell and Shauna Conrad of Halifax formed the winning team at the 1999 Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service Surf Lifesaving Championships held at Rissers Beach in Lunenburg County on Aug. 31.

Mr. Farwell and Ms. Conrad were the top finishing team in the water situations event, a triage event, and posted top-ten finishes in five other events.

This year's competition featured 58 of the top lifeguards from across Canada, some of whom competed as participants in the Canadian National Lifesaving Team selection camp held in Halifax over the weekend.

Jason Cross of Eastern Passage, a winner in previous years, put in another impressive performance, placing in the top three in six events and winning two. Most notably, Mr. Cross successfully defended his ironguard title, an event he has won 11 times in the past 12 years.

David Sage of Vancouver also posted noteworthy performances. Mr. Sage was victorious in the run-swim-run event, just edging out his teammate, Mr. Cross. The duo then won the rescue board relay race.

Top female performers of the day were Shannon Bell of West Vancouver, Hannah Fraser and Lori Borgal of Halifax and Amy Lanza of Ontario. In the female events, Ms. Bell won the ironguard; Ms. Fraser placed first in the run-swim-run and second in the ironguard; Ms. Borgal posted third place finishes in the run-swim-run, ironguard, and beach lags; and, Ms. Lanza won the beach flags.
