Minister's Message for Labour Day, Sept. 6, 1999

On Monday, Sept. 6, Nova Scotians will continue the 105-year-old tradition of honouring the working people of the province. In 1894, the government of Canada, led by a Nova Scotian, Sir John Thompson, enacted legislation declaring Labour Day as a Canadian holiday.

"Labour Day is always a good occasion to step back from our regular schedule and reflect on what we have accomplished and what we are all working toward," said Labour Minister Ron Russell. "On this, the final celebration of this special day in the 20th century, it is important to recognize the remarkable accomplishments of the past 100 years."

Mr. Russell pointed to the working people of the province as "our greatest resource." He cited their efforts as the reason Nova Scotia continues to prosper.

"We have one of the country's most reliable workforces, and we depend on them to produce goods and services that help create our high standard of living," Mr. Russell said. "As minister of labour, I wish to reiterate our commitment to fairness for the working people. We must always be mindful of the need to ensure labour laws are fair, balanced and current to the needs of workers."

The labour minister pointed to the new Occupational Health and Safety Regulations as proof positive that the government of Nova Scotia continues to work for advancements.

"These new regulations, and other accomplishments, have come about through the total co-operation of labour," Mr. Russell said. "I would hope that Nova Scotians would use this weekend to honour all workers, including organized labour, people of every industry and profession, those who work from their homes -- all those dedicated individuals who have contributed to our growth and prosperity."
