27th-Annual Lifesaving Championships

The Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service will hold its 27th-annual Surf Lifesaving Competition, Tuesday, Aug. 31, at Rissers Beach in Lunenburg County.

This year's competition will not only feature the top lifeguards from across the province, but also across the nation. The Canadian national core team will be attending the competition as part of their tryout camp in Halifax, Aug. 27-31.

Those successful at gaining a spot on the national team will represent Canada at the Rescue 2000 world lifesaving championships in Sydney, Australia, from March 23 to April 2, 2000. Six Nova Scotians will be vying for spots on our national squad: Tavis Austen, Antigonish; Lori Borgal, Halifax; Neal Durling, Prospect; Dave LeBlanc, Sydney; Chris Stewart, Halifax; and Nancy Witty, Wolfville.

Jason Cross of Eastern Passage has already made the team. Mr. Cross, who won four events at last year's competition, is expected to do well again this year. Since 1988, he has captured eight run-swim-run titles and 10 ironguard titles at this competition.
