N.S. Lifeguards to Compete in Shediac
SPORT/RECREATION COMMISSION-N.S. Lifeguards to Compete in Shediac
Eight lifeguards from Nova Scotia will compete in the 11th Annual New Brunswick Waterfront Lifeguarding Championship at Parlee Beach in Shediac, N.B., on Aug. 11.
The lifeguards, members of the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service, are: Gary Basso and Billy Clyburn of Dominion; Omar Corsetti, Mike Dull, Jeff Farwell, Hannah Fraser and Chris Swift of Halifax; and Dayna Wojcik of Hammonds Plains. Only Mr. Basso and Mr. Farwell have participated in this competition before.
Events include the ironguard relay, beach flags, rescue board relay, water situations, First Aid/CPR situations and a resuscitation skills race. Last summer, the ironguard relay was cancelled due to dangerous surf conditions, which appeared to work to the disadvantage of the Nova Scotians competing.
"Our lifeguards are in top physical condition and are very comfortable swimming and paddling in dangerous surf conditions," said Craig Durling, assistant director of the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service. "The beach conditions at Parlee are usually much gentler than in Nova Scotia. Hopefully, this will work to our advantage."
The Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service is a joint project of the Nova Scotia Sport and Recreation Commission and the Lifesaving Society, Nova Scotia Branch.
