N.S. Lifeguard Wins Duathlon Meet

A Nova Scotia lifeguard took first place in a duathlon meet in New Brunswick recently and qualified for the world championships this October in North Carolina.

Heather Goodfellow, beach captain at Rainbow Haven Beach, finished first in the women's 25-29 age group and third overall in the open women category at the Parlee Beach Duathlon in Shediac, N.B., on Aug. 8. Her finish qualifies her for the duathlon world championships being held in Huntersville, N.C., on Oct. 15.

A typical duathlon race consists of a 10 kilometre run, 40 kilometre bike ride and a 10 kilometre run.

Ms. Goodfellow, of Halifax, is the defending provincial 10 kilometre road racing series champion and has been a member of the Adidas Canada running team since 1998. She also won the Nova Scotia road racing series in 1997.

Ms. Goodfellow hopes to build on her success and plans to continue training throughout the summer. Working at Rainbow Haven Beach gives her the opportunity to train while maintaining a summer job. Ms. Goodfellow will be competing for the Dalhousie Tigers cross-country team this fall.

Rainbow Haven Beach is supervised by the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service, a joint project of the Nova Scotia Sport and Recreation Commission and the Lifesaving Society, Nova Scotia branch.
