'Green Tourism' Author to Address Conference

Greg Neale, environment correspondent for the Sunday Telegraph of London and author of The Green Travel Guide, will be one of the keynote speakers at an international conference taking place Sept. 10-12 in Halifax.

The conference, whose theme is Model Forests and Ecotourism: Keys to Sustainable Community Development, is an initiative of the Nova Scotia Francophonie Project. It is sponsored by the Office of Acadian Affairs, with further support from the Community Economic Development division of the provincial Department of Economic Development and Tourism, and from the federal departments of Canadian Heritage and Human Resource Development Canada. It is expected to attract a large number of international delegates and media following the Francophonie Summit in Moncton.

Mr. Neale has covered most of the major environment and development stories of the past decade, including the Rio Earth Summit and subsequent conferences around the world. In his 20-year journalistic career, he has written and broadcast widely on environmental, developmental and tourism issues.

His address Sept. 12 will be followed by several presenters who will examine the relationship of ecotourism to community development, and the risks and ethics of ecotourism.

In addition to presentations and speakers, there will be poster sessions that incorporate several themes, including community development through ecotourism and forestry, and a trade fair that will highlight the Canadian and International Model Forest Networks, as well as sustainable development products and services. Finally, there will also be two ecotourism tours to Acadian communities in Nova Scotia, permitting visitors to see the links between history, community and ecology.

The conference will be held at the World Trade and Convention Centre, 1800 Argyle St. More details are available on the Internet at www.ccfne.ns.ca/lanterne.
