Lifeguards to Compete in America

Nine individuals from the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service travel to the United States next week to compete in two lifeguard competitions.

Sean Connolly, Craig Durling, Neal Durling, Sean Dyer, Jeff Farwell and Chris Stone, all of Halifax, and Nancy Witty of Wolfville will compete in the 23rd Annual Newport Invitational Lifeguard Tournament in Newport, Rhode Island, Aug. 3-4.

Teams will compete in 12 events in the non-boat division, including the run-swim-run, iron man relay, 1000 metre swim and two kilometre beach run. Last year, teams from Nova Scotia placed first and second in the non-boat division.

From Aug. 6 to Aug. 7, the group will head to Cape May, New Jersey, to compete in the United States Lifesaving Association national championships. Dave LeBlanc of Sydney and Matt Foley of Jeddore will join the Nova Scotia contingent.

In this competition, and as entries from outside the United States, Nova Scotia participants are allowed to compete as individuals but not as a team.

The Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service is a joint project of the Nova Scotia Sport and Recreation Commission and the Lifesaving Society, Nova Scotia Branch.
