Municipal Development Board Elects New Chair

Coun. Brendon C. McCloskey of Charlottetown, P.E.I., has been elected as the new chair of the Maritime Municipal Training and Development Board. Mr. McCloskey replaces Mayor Laurence Mawhinney of Lunenburg.

Since 1994, Mr. McCloskey has represented elected municipal officials on Prince Edward Island as a member of the development board. He brings to his new position years of public service experience and a strong commitment to the organization.

Mr. McCloskey represents the Highfield district on city council. He has served in numerous capacities since being elected in October 1994. Currently, he sits on the Charlottetown public works and sewer committee and as chair of the police committee. Previously, Mr. McCloskey served as a councillor with the West Royalty community council.

The development board, an agency of the Council of Maritime Premiers, has been behind or involved in most major initiatives related to maritime municipal management upgrading since 1975.

During the 1990s, the board has served as a pioneer in the promotion of the Internet to municipal government as an important communication and management tool. And as an advocate and facilitator of municipal training and education programming, the board has benefited local government operations in the Maritimes.
