Loan Board CEO Honoured for Contribution

Derrick Jamieson of Truro, manager and chief executive officer of the Nova Scotia Farm Loan Board, is this year's recipient of the C.A. Douglas Award for achievement in agricultural extension work.

Mr. Jamieson receives the award for a career dedicated to improving the farm community he serves. His career in agriculture began in 1977 at the Farm Credit Corp. He moved to M.W. Graves and Co. in 1979, and seven years later joined the Nova Scotia Farm Loan Board as a loans officer.

Among his many accomplishments, Mr. Jamieson played a key role in the development and implementation of the 1997 and 1998 Weather-Related Loss Provision programs.

Mr. Jamieson has studied agriculture at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College and Montreal's MacDonald College. He plans to pick up textbooks again in the fall of 2000 when he will begin studies for a master's degree in business administration or public administration, using the monetary portion of the award to offset the costs of the program.

Applicants for the annual C.A. Douglas Award are considered on either single achievements or lifelong dedication to agricultural extension work. The award was established in 1984 in memory of Charles Douglas, an outstanding extension worker throughout his long career with the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture and Marketing. The award is intended for self-improvement of the recipient or to further the development of agricultural extension in Nova Scotia.

A certificate and cheque for $1,000 will be presented to Mr. Jamieson on Saturday by members of the Douglas family during the Nova Scotia Agricultural College's open house and alumni weekend in Truro.
