Exhibition, Community Fair Season Begins

Agriculture and Marketing (to Sept. 2000)

Exhibitions and community fairs -- a summer tradition in Nova Scotia -- are gearing up for another season starting next week with the opening of the South Shore Exhibition in Bridgewater.

"Exhibitions have been a part of the Nova Scotia way of life for more than two centuries and are an important part of summer celebrations across the province," said Ed Lorraine, Minister of Agriculture and Marketing. "They bring communities together, are an economic boost for our rural areas, and provide an opportunity for Nova Scotians to learn about and better understand agriculture and the food products we produce."

In 1998, more than 345,000 people attended exhibitions in the province, up from 320,000 the year before. Gross revenues in 1998 were about $1.8 million, up from $1.5 million in 1997.

Mr. Lorraine encourages all Nova Scotians to make exhibitions and community fairs part of their summer plans. "They are a fun time for everyone and a great chance to see friends and realize the importance of agriculture to Nova Scotia."
