All-Woman Lifeguard Competition

The team of Lori Borgal and Hannah Fraser dominated events at the second annual Nova Scotia All-Woman Beach Lifeguard Competition held this week at Rissers Beach, Lunenburg Co.

The two Halifax women clinched the overall team title by winning six of eight events at the competition, held July 20 by the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service. Nancy Witty of Wolfville, a member of last year's winning team, won the overall individual title.

Fifteen competitors from across the province duelled in the eight events: a 500-metre open-water swim; rescue tube relay; run-paddle-run; beach flags; ironwoman (run, paddle, surf-ski, swim, run); two-kilometre beach run; run-swim-run; and paddleboard relay.

Many of the highly competitive events ended in close finishes. In the 500-metre open-water swim, five seconds separated the second- and fifth-place finishers. In the ironwoman, a sprint to the finish ended with Ms. Borgal just edging out Ms. Witty, who was favoured to win.

The Nova Scotia All-Woman Beach Lifeguard Competition was sponsored by the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service, a joint project of the Nova Scotia Sport and Recreation Commission and the Lifesaving Society, Nova Scotia Branch.
