Goodfellow Qualifies for the Worlds
A Nova Scotia lifeguard took fourth place in a national triathlon event recently and qualified for the world championships this September in Montreal.
Heather Goodfellow, beach captain at Rainbow Haven Beach, finished fourth in the women's 25-29 age category at the 1999 Canadian Triathlon championships in Edmonton July 11. Her finish gave her entry to the world triathlon championships being held in Montreal Sept. 11-12.
The race -- which had more than 700 competitors overall -- saw Ms. Goodfellow finish with a time of two hours, 20 minutes and 30 seconds. She finished a 1500 metre swim in 23:11, a 40 kilometre bike ride in 1:19:32 and a 10 kilometre run in 37:47.
Ms. Goodfellow, of Halifax, hopes to build on her success and continue training throughout the summer. Working at Rainbow Haven Beach gives her the opportunity to train while maintaining a summer job.
Rainbow Haven Beach is supervised by the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service, a joint project of the Nova Scotia Sport and Recreation Commission and the Lifesaving Society, Nova Scotia branch.
