4-H Members Begin 27th Camping Season
Nova Scotia's provincial 4-H camp has opened its doors for the summer. Camp Rankin, on the Bras d'Or Lakes, gives youths an unparalleled experience of fun, skills, friendship and beautiful surroundings.
"The response we received for camp this year was excellent and we filled all the junior camps early," said Elizabeth Crouse, manager, 4-H and Rural Organizations. "The camp program has proven to be positive for many 4-H members and many of them will repeat their camp experience.
"We are grateful to the Richmond County 4-H Leaders Council for opening the camp to all 4-H members across the province, and that they put so much effort into running it."
Camp facilities include hiking trails, a beach and a dining and recreation hall. Trained camp counsellors lead 4-H members through traditional camp activities and 4-H sessions.
"Nova Scotia 4-H members are fortunate to have such a camp available for them," said Agriculture Minister Ed Lorraine. "Camp Rankin provides the children with an educational program and a memorable experience while they meet 4-H members from across the province. And as always, they learn to do by doing. It is a valuable part of the 4-H program."
Volunteers built Camp Rankin in 1972 as a centennial project of the Richmond County 4-H Leaders Council, creating the first 4-H camp in the Atlantic provinces. It sits on 24 hectares (60 acres) at Cape George, near St. Peter's.
Camp Rankin has provided unforgettable memories and experiences to thousands of Nova Scotia 4-H members and visitors. Although the original intent was to accommodate the 4-H clubs of Richmond County and surrounding area, it now hosts five six-day camps each summer for 4-H members from across Nova Scotia.
