Opening of Fishery a Boost to Nova Scotia

Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Keith Colwell today thanked the Department of Fisheries and Oceans for opening the saltwater sport fishery off Nova Scotia, emphasizing its importance to the economy of coastal communities.

"For years the marine recreational fishery has boosted the tourism industry in our fishing communities," said Mr. Colwell. "I thank the federal government for reopening the fishery and making sure that everyone can enjoy another one of our resources."

The saltwater sport fishery off Nova Scotia is divided into two sections: north of Halifax and south of Halifax.

North of Halifax, the fishery opened June 21 and continues to Sept. 7. A person may catch up to five groundfish a day. Catching halibut is not permitted.

South of Halifax, the fishery is open year-round. A person may catch up to 10 groundfish a day, including one halibut.

"The marine recreational fishery allows us all to feel part of the great tradition that our province has with the sea," said Mr. Colwell. "The opening of this fishery gives us one more reason to call ourselves Canada's Ocean Playground."
