Group Gets Accessibility Grant

The Annapolis West Health Foundation has received a $10,000 grant to purchase an accessible vehicle for use by the local community, Clifford Huskilson, Minister of Transportation and Public Works, announced today.

"All Nova Scotians should have accessible transportation," said Mr. Huskilson. "This money will assist the Annapolis West Health Foundation in providing a necessary service to individuals with accessible transportation needs. This vehicle will allow people to attend medical appointments, to go shopping, or just visit family and friends."

The Accessible Transportation Assistance Program provides grants of up to $10,000 toward the purchase of an accessible vehicle to communities, organizations or groups that provide transportation services for seniors or persons with disabilities.

The program was established in July 1998 in response to a report on inclusive transportation services initiated by the Disabled Persons Commission. This program is administered by the Department of Transportation and Public Works in co-operation with the departments of Community Services, Health, Education and Culture, Housing and Municipal Affairs, and the Utility and Review Board.

"We are encouraged by the number of organizations who participate in this accessibility program, said Huskilson. "The Annapolis West Health Foundation is addressing a serious transportation need in our community and this grant should help meet some of those needs."
