Tamarac Heights to Receive New Exit

Funding will be provided for alternative access to Tamarac Heights subdivision in Port Hawkesbury under the Provincial Capital Assistance Program, Ray White, Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs, announced today.

"This alternative route is vital to the safety of residents of Tamarac Heights," said Mr. White. "I am pleased that we were able to help the town of Port Hawksbury carry out this necessary safety precaution."

Presently, there is only one route in and out of Tamarac Heights subdivision. If the town of Port Hawkesbury were faced with a major accident or disaster at the intersection, the residents of Tamarac Heights would be forced to go through the disaster scene to exit the area, said Mr. White.

The new connector road will be constructed from Maple Court to Crandall Road, a distance of about 1,200 metres. It will allow for an evacuation route from the subdivision in case of an emergency. The new access road will also facilitate the development of needed serviced residential building lots in the area.

The Department of Housing and Municipal Affairs will contribute one-third of the total costs of the development of the connector road, up to $440,000. The project will be carried out over a two-year period, and the department's contribution will be spread evenly over these two years.

Minister White noted that with the completion of the project, provincial government financial participation in infrastructure work in the Crandall Road area will have exceeded $600,000. Recently completed work in the area includes the extension and upgrade of water and sewer infrastructure.
