New Port Hawkesbury Crown Attorney

The Port Hawkesbury office of the Public Prosecution Service has a new Crown attorney. Laurel Halfpenny MacQuarrie was appointed to the position June 9.

The deputy director of the service, Martin Herschorn, said Ms. Halfpenny MacQuarrie brings considerable criminal law experience to her position.

"Crown attorneys play a vital role in our criminal justice system and our communities," Mr. Herschorn said. "We are fortunate to have someone of Laurel's experience and abilities in this position in Port Hawkesbury."

A native of Melford, Guysborough Co., Ms. Halfpenny MacQuarrie has been a lawyer for nine years. She has prosecution experience at the federal, provincial and municipal levels, as well as several years' experience in private legal practice in Port Hawkesbury. She had been employed as a Crown attorney on a contract basis since September 1997.

Ms. Halfpenny MacQuarrie is one of two Crown attorneys in the Port Hawkesbury office, which covers courts in Port Hawkesbury, Port Hood, St. Peter's and Arichat. They also advise RCMP detachments in Inverness and Richmond counties and Port Hawkesbury, as well as Unama'ki Tribal Police in Chapel Island and local offices of the Department of Natural Resources.
