Guysborough Housing Upgrade Program

Housing and Municipal Affairs (to Sept. 2000)

About 28 people will be hired to make improvements to family and seniors' public housing in Guysborough County this summer.

"This project is good news for two reasons. First, it creates jobs where they are badly needed, and second, it protects our investment in public housing," said Ray White, Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs.

The Eastern Mainland Housing Authority will manage the $330,000 upgrade project in the Canso, Guysborough, Mulgrave, Isaacs Harbour and Sherbrooke areas. Improvements to the exteriors of some units will include painting, repairs to steps, walkways and parking lots. Interior painting, window and door replacements are also scheduled for many homes. Work begins this month.

"We're able to do this project because of the federal-provincial housing agreement," said Mr. White. "The 1997 agreement allows savings in social housing to remain in the province and to be reinvested in social housing."

Applications for employment are available at Human Resource Development Canada and the Housing Authority office in Guysborough and the town hall in Canso.
