Surplus Crown Property Disposal
More than 140 of Nova Scotia's classrooms, volunteer fire departments, transition houses and food banks have received surplus furniture and equipment through the Surplus Crown Property Disposal Act, said Clifford Huskilson, Minister of Transportation and Public Works.
"When we have surplus beds, desks or dishes, we want to help out by donating to the groups who need them," Mr. Huskilson said today. "We've been able to donate equipment to volunteer fire departments and furniture to transition houses and community centres."
Nova Scotia students are also important benefactors. Under the surplus Crown property disposal program, Transportation and Public Works donated 1,200 computers through the NovaKnowledge Association, Computers for Schools (Nova Scotia) program. The amount was an increase of more than 800 computers from last year.
The program uses various disposal methods for goods and property, including auctions, public tenders and donations. Net proceeds of the surplus assets sold this past fiscal year was $209,360.61.
"Since 1994, more than $3 million has been raised through this program," said Mr. Huskilson. "It is a success for everyone involved."
Tabled in the legislature today, the Surplus Crown Property Disposal Report covers the period between April 1, 1998, and March 31, 1999. The report is available at the Nova Scotia Government Bookstore, 1700 Granville St., Halifax, 902-424-7580 or 1-800-526-6575.
