New Video Reviews Fish Plant Sanitation

What better way for fish plant employees and employers to bone up on their cleanup than with a new video?

That was the thinking behind the creation of Fish Plant Sanitation - Step by Step. This 15-minute video takes an entertaining look at the basics of keeping a fish plant clean and the development of standard operating procedures for plant sanitation.

The Nova Scotia Fish Packers Association assisted the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture with the production of the video. Denny Morrow, the association's executive director, said the video is timely. With sanitation rules being tightened in the United States and Canada, Mr. Morrow said today's plant worker must be up to speed on approved cleaning procedures.

"The video is a very useful training tool," said Mr. Morrow. "We appreciate the province's contribution in developing it."

Keith Colwell, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, said keeping Nova Scotia plants clean protects the province's huge export trade in seafood.

The challenge in producing the sanitation video was to catch people's attention and make it memorable, said Gary Scott, a technology development manager with the department.

"We developed a story that follows the trail of an old-timer who learns the in's and out's of modern plant sanitation," said Mr. Scott. "We hope it makes it easier to remember."

Copies of the video are available for $25, HST included, by contacting the Nova Scotia Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, P.O. Box 2223, Halifax, Nova Scotia, B3J 2C4, or telephone 902-424-0343, fax 902-424-1766, or e-mail [email protected] .
