N.S. MUSEUM--Prescott House Museum Opens for Season

  • ---------------------------------------------------------------Prescott House Museum kicks off the 1999 season this weekend as the Annapolis Valley celebrates its famous apple blossoms.

On Saturday, May 29, at 2 p.m., drop by the museum for the first special tea of the season. These events are hosted by women's groups across the Valley every Saturday until Sept. 4. Have a cup of tea, enjoy the gracious setting of a Georgian country home and explore craft exhibits and demonstrations.

Were you a June bride? Six antique bridal gowns of the 1800s, from the collections of the Nova Scotia Museum and the Old Kings Courthouse Museum in Kentville, are on display at Prescott House until mid-July. Style, detail and decorum were the order of the Victorian day, but a dark coloured widow's wedding gown and vibrant plaid wedding suit worn by two brides challenge our ideas of appropriate attire.

To complete the wedding theme, visitors can see the dining room table set for a wedding dessert, just as it was in the 1940s when a wedding reception took place at Acacia Grove, as the house was known then.

Exquisite examples of the Prescott sisters' fine china, featuring pieces from the Royal Crown Derby collection, will also be on view. See Pink Lustre items and china from factories like Wedgwood, Royal Doulton, Royal Worcester, SŠvres, Davenport, and Colport.

Hours at Prescott House Museum, a part of the Nova Scotia Museum family, are from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is by donation.
