Youth Corps to Fill More Than 150 Summer Jobs
The Nova Scotia Youth Conservation Corps is looking for more than 150 people to work on environmental projects throughout the province this summer.
Young men and women will be hired to work as part of a crew within their own communities on such projects as watershed management, waste diversion, eco-tourism development, pollution prevention, climate change, environmental education, and promoting public awareness about the environment.
The deadline to apply is Friday, May 28, with jobs available from June 28 and Aug. 27. To qualify, an applicant must be a resident of Nova Scotia between 17 and 24 years of age.
"The Youth Conservation Corps is a great success, and we're pleased to lend our support to such a worthwhile program," says Michel Samson, Minister of the Environment and Minister responsible for the Youth Secretariat Act. "The program gives young people an opportunity to gain experience, while helping Nova Scotia meet its environmental challenges."
The province is contributing about $300,000 to the 1999 program, with community and other government partners providing additional funding. Now in its 10th year, the program requires communities to submit proposals for environmental projects to be carried out by youth crews.
