Sydney Mines Downtown Revitalization
Revitalization of downtown Sydney Mines begins this summer with the help of $500,000 from the province, Premier Russell MacLellan announced today.
"This project will make the downtown more attractive for new businesses and business expansion," said the premier. "We are putting people to work and building the foundation for new economic development."
The Sydney Mines Renewal Association, formed in 1997, has developed a comprehensive proposal to revitalize the downtown. Phase 1 will involve improvements to roads, sidewalks and overhead wiring in the Main Street area, from the old post office to Elliot Street.
Total cost of the project is $1.6 million. Premier MacLellan said other sources of funding are being pursued.
"It is reassuring to have Phase 1 of the downtown infrastructure improvements officially under way," said Rev. Gerald Dunphy, chair of the Sydney Mines Renewal Association. "Renewal will continue with community-based efforts to realize more opportunities for the downtown core."
"The people of Sydney Mines are to be congratulated for their efforts to revitalize their community," said Mayor David Muise. "This project will enhance the Main Street area and encourage further development."
