Art Bank Purchases 49 New Works

The Nova Scotia Art Bank has added 49 new works to its collection of arts and crafts produced by Nova Scotian artists. The pieces, acquired by the Department of Education and Culture, are part of the 1998-1999 Nova Scotia Art Bank Purchase Program.

Following a competition involving 105 applicants, an independent jury of three artists recommended that government purchase works from 45 artists. Jury member Judith Leidl said the panel was pleased its recommendations included 23 new artists.

"These new artists, along with the 22 other artists whose work is currently included in the art bank collection, represent high quality contemporary art in a variety of themes and media being produced in Nova Scotia," said Ms. Leidl. "The 49 new works will be displayed in various government departments and on loan to exhibitions, thus providing wide exposure for the artists. We congratulate the province on its ongoing commitment to Nova Scotian artists."

The art bank was created in 1975 to recognize Nova Scotian artists and stimulate public awareness of the visual arts. The bank purchases artworks that reflect the best of current visual expression.

The Cultural Affairs Division of the Department of Education and Culture owns, maintains and administers the art bank. Recommendations for jury members were provided by Visual Arts Nova Scotia, the Nova Scotia Designer Crafts Council, the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, and the Nova Scotia Print Makers Association.
