Antigonish Artworks Purchased by Art Bank

Two Antigonish artists had their works purchased by the Department of Education and Culture as part of the 1998-1999 Nova Scotia Art Bank Purchase Program.

Vicki MacLean and Nancy E. Stevens were chosen from more than 100 applicants.

Applications were received from all over Nova Scotia and reviewed by an independent three-member jury of artists. "These works represent high quality contemporary art in a variety of themes and media being produced in Nova Scotia at this time," said jury member Judith Leidl. "The new works will be displayed in various government departments and on loan to exhibits, thus providing wide exposure for the artist. We congratulate the province on its ongoing commitment to Nova Scotia artists."

The Nova Scotia Art Bank was created in 1975 to recognize Nova Scotian artists and to stimulate public awareness of the visual arts. The bank purchases artworks which reflect the best of current visual expression.

The Cultural Affairs Division of the Department of Education and Culture owns, maintains and administers the art bank. Recommendations for jury members were provided by Visual Arts Nova Scotia, the Nova Scotia Designer Craft Council, the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and the Nova Scotia Print Makers Association.
