Work Starts on Valley High School Renovations

Two Annapolis Valley high schools are a step closer to much-needed renovations, following the selection of an architect for Phase 1 of the projects.

The Department of Education and Culture has accepted a proposal from Barrie Langille Architects Ltd. to develop preliminary plans for additions and alterations at West Kings District High School and Central Kings Rural High School.

"This announcement is great news for the school communities of West and Central Kings," said Justice Minister Robbie Harrison, speaking on behalf of Education and Culture Minister Wayne Gaudet.

"The need for improvements at these schools is well known. Students and staff can now look forward to significant changes, which will strengthen teaching and learning."

For many years, the schools' outdated mechanical systems stood in the way of major improvements. As part of the short-term solution, West Kings' electrical system has been upgraded, and the lower gym ceiling at Central Kings has been sealed to address environmental issues.

Over the next several months, the architect will work with the community and the Annapolis Valley Regional School Board to assess the buildings. The assessment will determine which parts of the existing schools can remain and how much new construction will be required to fulfil educational needs.

The architect will prepare a preliminary design plan based on the results of the assessment.

The second phase of the program --the detailed design and construction schedule --is expected to begin this fall.
