Technology Company Makes Sydney Home Base
A new environmental technologies company is setting up shop in Sydney to develop and manufacture water and waste water treatment systems. Rawdon Technologies expects to create 13 full-time skilled jobs.
"This whole industry is at the infancy stage of development in North America," said Senator Peggy Butts. "Rawdon Technologies has an opportunity to establish a strong foothold, making the venture good for the environment and good for business. Its products have great export potential."
"Senator Butts made the announcement on behalf of Fred Mifflin, Secretary of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Enterprise Cape Breton Corp. Enterprise Cape Breton Corp., through the Business Development Program, has provided a repayable contribution of $76,000 to help the company design and manufacture a portable pilot plant. The announcement builds on the government's support of other initiatives under way in Cape Breton.
"This company is another example of Nova Scotia's growing expertise and reputation for leadership in the field of environmental technology," said Environment Minister Michel Samson, who was on hand for the announcement today at Sydney's water treatment plant. "Previously expensive solutions will become an affordable reality to help meet the need for clean drinking water both here in Nova Scotia and around the world. These solutions will be manufactured in Cape Breton using local expertise."
The department's Environmental Industries and Technologies Division was instrumental in setting up the venture. It contributed $18,608 to help Rawdon Technologies and Cape Breton Regional Municipality further develop the system. The department also helped secure other government support, including a $25,000 contribution under the National Research Council's Industrial Research Assistance Program.
"We're confident we can become a major player in the Atlantic Canada and global water and wastewater markets," said Allen Hawco, president of Rawdon Technologies. "Our products will help scores of communities that have been unable to afford conventional, highly engineered and capital-intensive solutions to treating water and waste water."
Rawdon Technologies is a joint venture involving Lynk Electric of Sydney, ABL Environmental of Dartmouth and Trihedral Engineering of Bedford. The newly formed company's head office and manufacturing facility is in Sydney.
