Youth Advisory Council Seeks Applications

If you've got some advice for the provincial Minister responsible for the Youth Secretariat Act, consider joining the Nova Scotia Youth Advisory Council. The council provides advice on the needs and concerns of youth, and the effectiveness of government programs targeted at youth.

The council is looking for youth representatives from the Strait region, Pictou/Antigonish and the South Shore area of the province. Applications from young people between the ages of 15 and 24 will be accepted until Friday, March 26.

"We recognize that young people are a valuable and often underutilized asset," said Michel Samson, Minister responsible for the Youth Secretariat Act. "A strong and active Youth Advisory Council will help us tap into a valuable resource when making decisions that affect young Nova Scotians."

People interested in the two-year term positions must be willing to attend four meetings per year, and, most importantly, be concerned about youth issues and needs. Travel and accommodation expenses associated with these meetings are covered.

"The council offers a great opportunity for youth to get involved in government decision making," said Meegan Dowe, acting chair of the Youth Advisory Council. "Organizations are realizing how innovative young Nova Scotians can be when looking for a different perspective."

The Youth Advisory Council gives young Nova Scotians the opportunity to express their views and their peers' views on issues effecting them today and in the future. Interested youth should send a resume, along with a one-page letter of their experiences and why they would be an asset, to: The Nova Scotia Youth Secretariat, P.O. Box 578, 5th Floor, Trade Mart Building, 2021 Brunswick St., Halifax, NS, B3J 2S9, fax: (902) 424-0717, e-mail: <[email protected].>
