Summer Diversity Employment Programs Available

Full-time students are invited to apply for two summer hiring programs administered by the diversity management unit of the Department of Human Resources.

The Summer Employment Diversity Initiative program is open to full-time students who are aboriginal, black, racially visible or students with disabilities. Through this program, students are placed in summer job opportunities in government across Nova Scotia.

Another program, Summer Employment Mentorship, is designed for young women studying in fields where women are under-represented, such as applied sciences, trades, technology and management. Students are matched with female employees within the provincial government who act as a mentor to the student. The program provides female students with work experience in their chosen field, along with a role model.

"The summer diversity employment programs are an important step to creating a truly diverse workforce in the provincial government," said Francene Cosman, Minister of Human Resources. "Along with providing these students with valuable work experience, we hope to encourage them to consider a career in the civil service."

About 30 students will be hired full-time for 15 weeks in various government offices. In previous years, students have worked in administration, clerical, health services, maintenance, technical, scientific and professional positions.

The programs are open to full-time students in university, community college, private trade schools or high school who will be returning to school in the fall of 1999.

Applications should be received by March 26. Students may send applications and/or resumes to: Summer Employment Opportunities Diversity Management Unit, Department of Human Resources, P.O. Box 943, Halifax, N.S., B3J 2V9, or fax them to 902-424-0611.

Applicants may also apply on-line through the Department of Human Resources website at http://www.gov.ns.ca./humr/employ .

Information on the programs will also be available at campus employment centres at universities and community colleges, high schools, Access Nova Scotia Centres and Human Resource Centres of Canada.
