The Governor of Maine has given his endorsement to the Port of Halifax in its bid to win a contract with Maersk and Sea-Land for a post-Panamax container terminal.
In a statement at Province House today, Governor Angus King formally acknowledged Halifax's bid as important to the entire northeastern Atlantic region. He also indicated that the greatest benefit for Maine would result from a Maersk and Sea-Land decision that awards the contract to both Halifax and New York. "Anything that strengthens the economy and increases economic activity in this region can't help but be of benefit," he said.
Premier MacLellan said the province is grateful for Maine's support, which clearly demonstrates the strong ties that have existed between Nova Scotia and its New England neighbour for generations. "Maine's endorsement of this bid is a great vote of confidence for our province and the Port of Halifax."
Referring to a successful post-Panamax bid by Halifax as "One of the great infrastructure projects of the 21st century," Governor King said he regards this as a business opportunity with direct benefits to Maine businesses, ports and rail facilities.
"I think a tremendous opportunity exists for transshipment and rail traffic between Nova Scotia and Maine," said Premier MacLellan.
Halifax is on the short list with New York/New Jersey and Baltimore for a post-Panamax container contract. Maersk and Sea-Land, two of the largest container lines in the world, expect to make a decision soon.
Governor King has been in Nova Scotia since Monday leading a delegation of Maine business leaders on a trade mission.
