Nova Scotia Expertise Headed for Moscow
Nova Scotia is sending a solid waste management expert to Moscow as part of the Russia-Canada Cooperative Environmental Decision-Making Project.
Gerard MacLellan is in charge of implementing solid waste management programs for Nova Scotia's Department of the Environment. He has been recruited by the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment to participate in a program designed to offer consultative and educational assistance to the City of Moscow and adjacent counties as they deal with serious solid waste issues.
Environment Minister Michel Samson says Nova Scotia has been singled out as one of the leaders in the field.
"We are proud to have the developed this expertise and to share our successful programs with the people of Moscow," said Mr. Samson. "Nova Scotia is among the waste management leaders in North America. This recognition demonstrates that we are indeed developing a reputation for our programs around the world."
The project is sponsored by the Moscow Science Foundation through the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment. Mr. MacLellan will be joined by his counterpart from Prince Edward Island. They will take part in workshops and offer to their Russian colleagues some options in solid waste planning.
The Russia-Canada environment mission leaves for Moscow on Saturday, Feb. 27, and returns to Canada on March 8.
