Mediator Appointed in Labour Dispute

Labour Minister Russell MacKinnon has appointed New Glasgow lawyer Milton Veinot to mediate the current labour dispute with CUPE and Oceanview Manor in Eastern Passage and Braemare Adult Residential in Sydney. The minister hopes this initiative will lead to further settlements in areas currently facing labour difficulties.

"I am taking this proactive measure in an effort to bring about a speedy resolution in this impasse between employees and employers at these facilities," said Mr. MacKinnon. "Mr. Veinot is a noted arbitrator and worked hard to resolve a labour dispute at two Cape Breton-area nursing homes late last year."

"Mr. Veinot will be assisted by Department of Labour conciliators who have been involved in the process to date. The conciliation staff are fully supportive of this appointment."

Mr. MacKinnon said he fully supports the collective agreement process, but the perceived uncertainty is causing growing concerns with residents and their families.

"I am taking this step with the confidence that Mr. Veinot can mediate a fair and lasting resolve and that patient care, which is foremost in the minds of all parties, is not interrupted."
