Nova Scotia Honours Housing Industry's Best
Twelve residential projects demonstrating excellence in design, construction and historical restoration have received special recognition from the Province of Nova Scotia.
Ray White, Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs, and Kennie MacAskill, Minister of Natural Resources, presented awards to the successful entrants in the 17th Annual Nova Scotia Home Awards Program at a ceremony today in Halifax.
The two departments co-operate in carrying out the program, which is open to all Nova Scotians. It is intended to encourage advancement in housing design and construction, and promote restoration projects, while raising public awareness of Nova Scotia's housing industry. The awards have grown to become a symbol of achievement for architects, builders, contractors and homeowners throughout the province.
"This is an occasion in which we can share a sense of pride in Nova Scotia's housing industry," said Mr. White. "It is important to recognize those whose talent and commitment to their craft have given this province a world-class reputation in home construction and design."
The program has continued to grow over the years. This year, it drew 22 submissions in five categories: home unit design, home construction or delivery innovation; home renovation/ rehabilitation; historical restoration; and energy efficiency or alternative energy. The final category is sponsored by the Department of Natural Resources.
"For the past six years, my department has been a proud sponsor of the energy efficiency category," said Mr. MacAskill. "By making homes and buildings energy efficient, we are being environmentally responsible."
Judging took place in early December. Jury members were: program chair Henn Soosaar, Wayde Brown, both of the Department of Housing and Municipal Affairs; Brian Hayes, Department of Natural Resources; Keith Sawlor, Canadian Home Builders' Association of Central Nova Scotia; and Terence Gallagher, Nova Scotia Association of Architects.
Winners received an embossed bronze plaque as well as a framed certificate acknowledging the contributions of the owner, builder, and the architect or designer involved with the project.
A special presentation was made to a member of the Nova Scotia Home Builders' Association. Edmund Benoit received the Industry Builder of the Year Award for his professionalism and outstanding commitment to the residential construction industry in Nova Scotia.
