Minister Tours Hants County Roads

Transportation and Public Works Minister Clifford Huskilson was in Hants County this week for a tour of rural roads.

"The 1999 road work season is fast approaching, so it's important I have a local perspective to help me decide how best to address the needs and concerns of communities," said Mr. Huskilson. "This firsthand look at the roads is important and helpful for me as the transportation minister."

Mr. Huskilson's tour Tuesday covered a large part of the county, from Enfield to Mount Uniacke, to the Noel Shore and through the Maitland area.

Over the past several months, the minister has been on a grassroots tour to review the condition of Nova Scotia's roads. He has visited the counties of Colchester, Inverness, Guysborough, Pictou, Cape Breton, Cumberland, Yarmouth, Antigonish and Shelburne, the Eastern Shore and Musquodoboit Valley areas, and conducted an unofficial tour of Richmond County roads.

"Transportation and Public Works has a comprehensive, technical process for prioritizing road work in Nova Scotia, but we also want to work with the people who drive over these roads every day," Mr. Huskilson said.

Transportation and Public Works allocated $53 million through 93 tenders during the 1998 repaving program.
