Evangeline Exhibit on Display until March 1
Anyone with an interest in Acadian history and the romantic, tragic story of Longfellow's Evangeline should visit the Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History in Halifax.
A travelling exhibit, Evangeline's Odyssey, as well as a program of talks, film and entertainment, will be at the museum until March 1.
Wayne Gaudet, Minister of Education and Culture and Acadian Affairs, officially opens the exhibit Wednesday, Jan. 27. Members of the public are welcome.
Along with the exhibit, a new school program offered at the Museum of Natural History is being introduced. As part of the Acadian Discovery program, students will act out activities of everyday life in Belleisle in 1720, including preparing to celebrate an engagement. Using the tools and techniques of archeologists, students will also dig into Acadian history -- uncovering pieces of jaw harps, tools, ceramic dishes and other artifacts of daily life.
A new Nova Scotia Museum publication, Looking into Acadie: 3 Illustrated Talks, provides well-documented accounts of recent historical and archeological research that presents important new information about the Acadian heritage.
Mr. Gaudet said these projects demonstrate the tremendous range of work of the Nova Scotia Museum. "The museum interprets and presents a wealth of information in creative ways of interest to everyone, from grandchildren to grandparents.
"Thousands of people walk through museum doors across the province each year," he said. "We come to learn, we come to enjoy with our families, and we leave with more than we came with -- more information, more knowledge, and sometimes a personal connection with something we saw or read."
Creating and hosting exhibitions, creating public and school programs, researching and producing publications and expanding a comprehensive website are just some of the ways the museum educates Nova Scotians about Nova Scotia.
Mr. Gaudet credits the partnership between the Acadian community and the museum for bringing the second major Acadian exhibit to the Museum of Natural History in two years.
"This exhibit is just one example of the natural link between Acadian Affairs and Education and Culture. I look forward to strengthening this connection as minister."
Wednesday's celebration runs from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Museum of Natural History, 1747 Summer St., Halifax. Interpreters from Societe Promotions Grand Pre will also attend in period costume.
