Funds for Lunenburg Transport Study

Ray White, Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs, announced today that $15,000 will be contributed to a study aimed at more effective use of Lunenburg County's transportation resources.

The financial support was approved for the Lunenburg County Steering Committee for Regional Public Transportation (LC-SCRPT) under the Community Based Transportation Action Plan, funded by the Department of Housing and Municipal Affairs.

With the help of an independent consultant, the LC-SCRPT is undertaking a comprehensive investigation into the transportation requirements of various groups throughout the county. It will look at existing transportation systems and resources and how they are currently used. The committee plans to complete a report based on the findings late this year. It will outline recommendations and solutions to more closely meet community transportation needs.

"This study is a fundamental step in ensuring that all Lunenburg County residents have an equal opportunity to access employment in their area and to fully participate in community activities," said Mr. White. "The benefits will be both social and economic."

LC-SCRPT is a non-profit charitable organization made up of individuals from various sectors of the community, including disabled persons, seniors, and representatives from the tourism industry and labour.

This is the ninth study to receive funding under the two-year $150,000 Community Based Transportation Action Plan, which began in 1997. Although transportation is primarily a municipal responsibility, the aim of the program is to help encourage the development of inclusive local transportation services.

The Community Based Transportation Action Plan is administered by the Department of Housing and Municipal Affairs in conjunction with an interdepartmental committee made up of representatives from Transportation and Public Works, Community Services, Health, and Education and Culture, as well as the Utility and Review Board and the Disabled Persons Commission.
