Lockeport Byelection Rescheduled
The byelection for town council in Lockeport, scheduled for Jan. 16, has been cancelled because only one person filed nomination papers by the Dec. 28 deadline. Housing and Municipal Affairs Minister Ray White has set a new date of Feb. 20 for a byelection.
"I strongly encourage the residents of the Town of Lockeport to come forward and support the town by filing nomination papers," said Mr. White.
"Small towns are integral to the social and economic fabric of Nova Scotia. While persons serving in public office at the local government level are required to make huge sacrifices, their efforts can make a dramatic difference in the quality of life enjoyed by all community residents."
Mr. White said, "I am optimistic that the Feb. 20 byelection will result in all council vacancies being filled. In the unlikely event that no one comes forward, we may have to explore other governance options with residents of the town."
Lockeport businessman Elliott Morash, who won a seat by acclamation, will join Mayor Sarah Huskilson on council after he is sworn in. However, there's still no quorum, so actions requiring council approval cannot be made.
In the interim, the Department of Housing and Municipal Affairs has appointed a special advisor to ensure that the town continues to pay bills, salaries and meet other financial obligations.
