Province Names Port Authority Member

Transportation and Public Works (to Oct. 2007)

Transportation and Public Works Minister Clifford Huskilson today announced the appointment of Sir Graham Day for a three-year term to the Halifax Port Authority board of directors.

"I am extremely pleased that Nova Scotia will be represented on the Halifax Port Authority board by such an eminently qualified individual," said Mr. Huskilson. "Sir Graham Day brings a wealth of business experience to the port authority."

Sir Graham, of Hantsport, has served on the boards of not-for-profit corporations and national and international companies, including the Bank of Nova Scotia, Sobeys Canada Inc. and TransCanada Pipelines Ltd. In 1989, he was knighted by the Queen for services to British industry. He was chairman and CEO of British Shipbuilders in the mid-1980s and was interim chairman of British Aerospace between 1991 and 1992.

Currently, Sir Graham is chairman of Ontario Hydro Services Company Inc. He is chancellor of Dalhousie University and holds the Herbert Lamb Chair at the Dalhousie School of Business.

"The Halifax Port Authority will certainly be well served by Sir Graham's international business acumen, particularly now as the port prepares to compete for more international shipping business," Mr. Huskilson said.

The Halifax Port Authority will be established early this year as a result of changes to the federal Canada Marine Act. The authority will replace the Halifax Port Corp. as manager of the port. Its board of directors will include seven members, one appointed by the provincial government, one by the municipal government, and five appointed by the federal cabinet. Four of the five federal appointees will be nominated through consultation with port stakeholders.
