Response to Workers' Compensation Report

The Nova Scotia government has responded to the report of the Select Committee on the Workers' Compensation Act by introducing legislation aimed at implementing the report recommendations.

"It is important to keep the momentum going," said Labour Minister Russell MacKinnon. "This legislation reflects the recommendations of the select committee and the concerns voiced by many Nova Scotians right across this province."

In compiling its report, the committee heard 174 presentations at public hearings and received more than 100 submissions by phone, fax, e-mail and regular mail. The committee tabled its report in the legislature today.

"We are committed to improving the system for injured workers and their families as well as employers," said Mr. MacKinnon. "The goals are fairness, respect, stability and balance."

The legislation outlines a number of steps aimed at addressing problems in the system, including the current backlog of appeals and an unfunded liability of more than $360 million.

"We understand that people may have questions or concerns about certain parts of this legislation," said the minister. "We are simply introducing this legislation to keep the dialogue open. We encourage people to come forward with suggestions for improvement during the law amendments process. We are interested in what Nova Scotians have to say."

The minister thanked the committee, its chairman, Michael Baker, and all Nova Scotians who made submissions.

"It's clear that the problems in the system did not happen overnight, and they likely won't be solved overnight," said Mr. MacKinnon. "But today, we have taken an important step forward. In the end, with all partners involved and engaged, we can achieve real and positive change for all Nova Scotians."
