4-H Members Represent Nova Scotia at Royal

Sixteen 4-H members in the Beef and Dairy Project will be travelling to Toronto to represent Nova Scotia in two prestigious cattle shows at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair from Nov. 7-9. Participants were chosen at the 4-H Provincial Show held in Truro last month.

"In Nova Scotia we have some of the finest beef and dairy cattle in Canada," said Agriculture and Marketing Minister Ed Lorraine. "It is an honour for these 4-H members to show at the Royal. We couldn't have selected finer agriculture ambassadors to represent the cattle industry in our province."

Eight 4-H dairy members will participate in the Scotiabank Hayes Classic Dairy Show on Nov. 8-9, where they will compete against 4-H members from across Canada for top honours. Nova Scotia participants are: Angela Terry, Brian Masters, Lucas Dickie and Krista McCallum of Colchester County; Trevor Tower and Craig Carter of Cumberland County; and Quentin Landry of Antigonish County. The spare for 1998 was Melissa Dickie of Colchester County. The group will be chaperoned by George Dickie of Colchester County.

Donald Cluney of Pictou County, as the winner of the Versteeg Memorial Award, will also be attending. This award is presented to a 4-H member based on the conformation of the calf and the showmanship ability of the member.

Nova Scotia participants in the Scotiabank Hayes Classic Dairy Show are generously sponsored by: Versteeg Memorial; Nova Scotia Animal Breeders Co-op; Scotsburn Dairy; Farmers Dairy; Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture and Marketing; Nova Scotia/Newfoundland Holstein Association; Joint Dairy Breeds; Colchester Federation of Agriculture; Co-op Atlantic; and Truro Agromart.

Eight 4-H beef members will also be representing Nova Scotia at this year's Knob Hill National Junior Beef Heifer Show on Nov. 7-8. Nova Scotia participants are: Chris Tower and Mark Trueman of Cumberland County; Christy Bowron and Julie MacKay of Pictou County; Krista Pemberton, Tara Veniot and Sarah Palmer of Hants County; and Andrew Taylor of Colchester County. The chaperones for this competition are Steve and Lee Boyle of Antigonish County.

Nova Scotia participants in the Knob Hill National Junior Beef Heifer Show are generously sponsored by: Truro Agromart; Kings Mutual Insurance; individual Nova Scotia beef producers; Knob Hill Farms Ltd.; Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture and Marketing; Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada; The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair; Jillian Foster and co-operating veterinary supply companies; Pictou County Cattle Producers; Central Cattle Producers, George P. Kings Contracting; Cumberland County CIBC; Nova Scotia Aberdeen Angus Association; Nova Scotia Hereford Club; Maritime Limousin Association; and the Nova Scotia Shorthorn Club.

Without annual financial support from major sponsors, producers and businesses, individual 4-H delegates would not have the opportunity to exhibit at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. At the Royal, 4-H members represent the Nova Scotia 4-H program and show the rest of Canada the quality of the cattle Nova Scotia has to offer.
