Appointment to the Higher Education Commission

The Council of Maritime Premiers is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Carmelita Boivin-Cole to the position of Chief Executive Officer of the Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission, effective Oct. 27. Dr. Boivin-Cole was appointed following a national search conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers Management Consultants.

Dr. Boivin-Cole most recently held the position of New Brunswick Director General -Policy, Planning and Coordinating Branch of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. From 1993 to 1997, Dr. Boivin-Cole held positions as Strategic Advisor and Director General -Strategic Planning and Review with Health Canada. For the past 25 years, she has held senior positions and assignments with various federal government departments, including Veterans Affairs, the Department of Foreign Affairs, Treasury Board Secretariat, Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages, Department of Communications, and Privy Council Office, among others.

Dr. Boivin-Cole received an M.A. (1972) and a Ph.D. (1981) in Comparative Literature from Harvard University and was the recipient of Fulbright and Harvard Fellowships. Dr. Boivin-Cole is currently a member of the Advisory Council, Institute of Biomedical Engineering at the University of New Brunswick.

The Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission was established in 1974 by the council to assist the provinces and the institutions in attaining a more efficient and effective utilization and allocation of resources in the field of higher education in the region. The commission's mandate was renewed in 1997 to focus on service to students and to emphasize its work on quality assurance, information management, and other co-operative regional arrangements.
