Minister Applauds New Partnership

A new partnership between the Atlantic Provinces Transportation Commission (APTC) and the Canadian Industrial Transportation Association (CITA) is an important merger that will help raise the profile of Nova Scotia's transportation needs on the national stage, said Clifford Huskilson, Minister of Transportation and Public Works.

"This region needs to advance Atlantic Canadian ideas and offer a strong regional viewpoint on national transportation issues," Mr. Huskilson said at a ceremony marking the merger today. "This new partnership between APTC and CITA will provide the region with a stronger voice and presence in Ottawa."

Mr. Huskilson witnessed the signing of the memorandum of understanding between the groups to co-operate more closely on key transportation and shipping matters in Atlantic Canada.

"We need to make Ottawa understand that a national transportation system is only as strong, effective and vital as the sum of its parts," he said.

APTC and CITA are highly regarded within the transportation sector as advocates of a strong transportation network in Canada. For example, CITA is an active supporter of the establishment of post-Panamax facilities for the port of Halifax, said Pierre Cadieux, the president of CITA.

"We are very happy to have Minister Huskilson witness this memorandum," said Mr. Cadieux. "His presence today as a transportation minister from the Atlantic region, and as a regulator of shipper-carrier relationships, is both symbolic and significant."

Mr. Huskilson said he is looking forward to working with the new partnership.

"A vibrant economy is driven by a strong transportation system," said the minister. "We need champions who recognize its importance and make their views known. This kind of interest can only help all Nova Scotians."
