Public Views on Protected Area in Cape Breton

Environment Minister Don Downe said today alternate methods have been established to allow people input on the protected area designation of Polletts Cove-Aspy Fault in northern Cape Breton.

"I am firmly committed to hearing the views of the public on this issue," said Mr. Downe. "It is important to complete this consultative process by offering other ways for people to voice their opinions. I want to reassure Nova Scotians of my intention to carefully review all issues raised."

The original schedule of open house meetings was cancelled by the planning team after disruptive behaviour that involved harassment and intimidation.

To allow those who have not yet made a presentation the opportunity to be heard, written submissions will be accepted until Oct. 7, 1998. They can be sent to:

or by e-mail to <[email protected].>

The Department of Environment has also established a toll-free number. Staff will answer questions on this issue from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, Oct. 5 to Friday, Oct. 9, 1998 by calling 1-888-449-0448.

"People must be able to submit their views uninhibited," said Mr. Downe. "The process is meant to be inclusive and designed as a partnership that allows people a voice in the management of these important lands."

The Wilderness Areas Protection Act passed first reading in the legislature in June 1998. It designates 31 wilderness areas in Nova Scotia as unique environments which will be given formal protection under the act.
