Coal Mine Proposal Approved for Cottam Settlement

Environment Minister Don Downe has approved a proposal by Berichan Resources Limited and Debert Mining Inc. to establish and operate a small-scale surface coal mine at Cottam Settlement, Colchester County.

The companies applied under the Environmental Assessment Regulations to establish the mining operation, which will produce about 101,600 metric tonnes (100,000 tons) of low-sulphur coal over the next two years.

A review of the registration information demonstrates the facility can be developed and operated without adverse or significant environmental effects. The proponent has agreed to all recommendations relating to preservation and protection of the environment.

Mining and site reclamation will take place concurrently as only small areas of bedrock will be exposed at any one time. The project will employ an estimated 10 full-time workers and four or more part-time employees.
