4-H Members Attend Provincial Show

Nova Scotia 4-H members and leaders will be taking part in the largest provincial 4-H Show in Canada from Oct. 2 -4, 1998 at the Provincial Exhibition Grounds in Truro.

The annual Provincial 4-H Show is an opportunity for 4-H members to showcase their project achievements to the public. Approximately 2,800 youth and 1,000 adult leaders attend the show, where 4-H members from across Nova Scotia compete in a variety of livestock, homemaking and non-livestock classes for top honours.

"When you see a 4-H member participating at the Provincial 4-H Show you see their enthusiasm for the program and their pride in the hard work that got them to this level," said Agriculture and Marketing Minister Ed Lorraine. "Many of the leaders in Nova Scotia's agricultural communities have been involved, and started out in, the 4-H program."

More than 40 skill developing projects in livestock, foods and woodworking will be on display at the show. Livestock competitions, a fashion show, floral arranging competition, market steer and lamb auction, and selections for Toronto's Royal Winter Fair are some of the highlights.

"This show is evidence that 4-H is Great in 98' just as our theme suggests," said Liz Crouse, supervisor of 4-H and Rural Organizations with the Department of Agriculture and Marketing. "4-H has been a part of rural communities in Nova Scotia for 76 years and the program is still offering young people many opportunities for personal and skill development."

Each year a county hosts the provincial show. This year Kings County 4-H Council is responsible for organizing it, including site arrangements, security and fund-raising.

The 4-H show is a weekend of wholesome fun and fair play. The public is welcome to attend the show to see the best 4-H members have to offer.
