Yarmouth County Partnering Funds Approved

Four projects aimed to encourage innovation in the fishing industry are being funded in Yarmouth County by the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture.

Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Keith Colwell says approval of the projects will improve boat building, lobster processing, mussel aquaculture and harbour infrastructure.

"Innovation is a necessity when it comes to competition and these sectors need the tools to do that," says Mr. Colwell. "These projects will benefit not only the applicants but industry in general in Yarmouth County."

Combined funding for the projects will equal $40,000 with 16 jobs expected in the short-run and many more in the long-run.

One project will apply British rudder technology to Cape Island boats made by the company Lady Vanessa Fisheries in Lower West Pubnico.

The Ultra rudder improves the power, manoeuvreability and fuel efficiency of boats making them more attractive in the area and for export.

The projects were recommended by staff according to criteria. Funding comes from the department's fisheries development programs while the rest comes from the applicant and other public sources.
