Three Fathom Harbour Funds Approved
Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Keith Colwell is pleased to announce approval for the installation of a winch on the wharf at Three Fathom Harbour near Lawrencetown.
Twenty to 30 fishing boats in the area are in need of a new winch that will help them unload their catches and make repairs to their boats more efficiently. The project will receive a total of $4,000.
"To be productive, wharves like the one at Three Fathom Harbour need improved capabilities," says Mr. Colwell. "This project will mean less bottlenecks, more activity, and eventually jobs."
Five jobs will be created in the short-term while many more are expected in the long-run because of other activity the winch is expected to produce.
Increased use from fishermen, aquaculturalists, and recreational users is expected to create spinoff activities in trucking, processing, equipment supply and tourism.
The projects were recommended by staff according to program criteria. Funding comes from the department's fisheries development programs while the rest comes from the applicant and other public sources.
