Pictou County Partnering Funds Approved
Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Keith Colwell is pleased to announce two projects which will improve the industry in Pictou County.
The projects will receive a total of $9,000 and will create seven jobs in the short-run with many more expected in the long-run if they are successful. The projects look to improve fisheries management practices and wharf technology in the area.
"The fishery is a major employer in Pictou County and in order for it to thrive it needs to be properly managed," said Mr. Colwell.
The herring management project looks to improve population estimates through the use of sonar technology. Since the roe fishery currently employs 500 fishermen and many others in spinoff activities, improving estimates is important to keeping the fishery sustainable.
The project applying new winch technology will be tested to increase efficiency in unloading catches and in boat repair.
The projects were recommended by staff according to program criteria. Funding comes from the department's fisheries development programs while the rest comes from the applicant and other public sources.
